LACOMBE CONDUCTS SCHEHERAZADE
2014–15 Season
Concert Information
Lacombe led a performance marked by clarity, balance and authority. The buoyancy and excitement of the festival scene [in Petrouchka] came through immediately in the brisk, perky winds, the waterfall gush of strings sliding downward and weighty cello strikes. As the orchestra conveyed the appearance of various visitors, Bart Feller's flute solo stood out as by turns delicate, singing and strong.
When it comes to telling tales through music, Russian composers are unparalleled. Just as Scheherazade captivated a king with her stories, Rimsky-Korsakov’s sumptuous and colorful tone poem evokes all the beauty and mystery of this classic legend. The adventures of the lovelorn puppet Petrouchka spring vividly to life in Stravinsky’s colorful ballet score.
