Asbury Park Press: ‘NJSO is hitting all the right notes’
The NJSO and Music Director Xian Zhang are “hitting all the right notes,” The Asbury Park Press writes:
As we plan out the cultural calendar for the coming months, the highlight must undoubtedly be this group, which promises an exciting lineup of programs in six venues throughout the state from October to June.
The combination of Zhang and the orchestra seems such a rewarding, natural fit; it’s hard to believe they’ve only been together one full season.
On the podium, Zhang is graceful but pragmatic, not interested in either excess or excessive restraint. More than most conductors I’ve seen, her body language is conversational, attentive and engaged with the ensemble and responding to all it needs and personalities ... she is also inspired. ... As a conductor, Zhang gestures are informed by a rock solid interpretation and that, in turn, is supported by her zealous curiosity and sharp musicality.
...
The ensemble itself is some of the best musicians the area has to offer. Season after season, the group has remained the leading and most reliable conveyor of quality classical music in the state.
...
As I’ve said before, we are a state that prizes its rich musical culture. As such, we can show our support, our expectation that we will always have the NJSO, by filling the halls for every concert.
