Day 3: Thursday, July 17

Thursday was a whirlwind day for the composers of the NJSO Edward T. Cone Institute. For each composer, the morning started with an individual masterclass with composer and Institute Director Steven Mackey at Princeton University—fittingly, in the music building’s aptly named Cone Seminar Room.

Daniel Vezza of Composer Conversations, a blog and podcast, continued the interview series he is conducting with each composer—this morning, it was Lembit Beecher’s turn to discuss his composing career, his Institute experience so far and his plans for what comes next.

After the Institute concludes, Vezza will air his interviews with the composers on his website and iTunes podcast—stay tuned!

At lunchtime, the composers boarded a train to New York City for an exciting afternoon. The group met at the offices of music publisher Boosey & Hawkes for a discussion of publishing and promotion, led by Boosey & Hawkes President Zizi Mueller.

The group then traveled to WQXR’s studios for interviews with the station’s Q2 Music.

The evening culminated in an intimate reception honoring the composers. NJSO President & CEO James Roe hosted a gathering that brought together arts-industry figures from the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Baryshnikov Arts Center, Imani Winds, Now Ensemble, Flux Quartet and more.
