Daily Record previews ‘Casablanca’
“Play it again, NJSO,” The Daily Record writes:
Hollywood and symphony music fans, you must remember this.
The New Jersey Symphony Orchestra will perform the soundtrack of Warner Bros. 1942 classic “Casablanca” as the movie is shown on screens Saturday, Feb. 9 at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark and Sunday, Feb. 10 at the State Theatre in New Brunswick.
The NJSO is looking for fans beyond typical orchestra devotees to walk into its gin joints, er, theaters.
“In past years we’ve had a pop series and that has typically focused on Broadway and the American Songbook and we wanted to try to introduce a new texture so the movie thing made sense,” said Roger Wight, director of artistic planning for the NJSO.
So it’s fitting to present, on the eve of Valentine’s Day, the story of Rick, played by Humphrey Bogart, and Ilsa (Ingrid Bergman), whose star-crossed love affair doesn’t amount to a hill of beans as the winds of war start to ravage Europe. “Casablanca” is considered one of the great films of Hollywood.
Just try not to mist up at the end.
