Jeannette Sorrell and the New Jersey Symphony deliver an imaginative rendition of Handel’s Messiah

Jan 1, 2025

Jeannette Sorrell brought new meaning to the phrase “hallelujah” as she led the New Jersey Symphony, guest vocal soloists and the Montclair State University Singers in three creative, Baroque-style performances of Handel’s holiday classic in Princeton and Newark. Nancy Plum of Town Topics took notice of this in her review of the Friday Princeton performance.

As evidenced by her long leadership and more than 30 recordings with the period instrument ensemble Apollo’s Fire, Sorrell is an innovator, and definitely not afraid to take a new look at traditional musical works. New Jersey Symphony’s interpretation of Messiah unquestionably brought something new to the table, while simultaneously giving the audience the chance to re-listen to an old seasonal friend.
