NJSO TO DONATE TICKETS TO NEWARK-BASED NONPROFITS FOR EACH TICKET PURCHASED BY NEWARK EMPLOYEES

NEWARK, NJ (May 31, 2013)—The New Jersey Symphony Orchestra hosts Newark Neighbors Night at its Friday, June 7, performance of Stravinsky’s groundbreaking  The Rite of Spring  at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC) in Newark. The Orchestra is offering Newark-area employees the opportunity to purchase concert tickets for 50% off—and for each ticket purchased at the reduced price, the NJSO will donate a ticket to a Newark-based nonprofit organization for its clients or staff to attend the concert.

The June 7 performance at NJPAC begins at 8 pm; a special Newark Neighbors Night reception begins at 7 pm and will feature a performance by the Newark Boys Chorus. Discounted tickets and reservations for the pre-concert reception are available by using the promotion code NEIGHBOR13 when purchasing tickets online or by phone.

Participating nonprofit organizations include Friends of the Newark Public Library, Gilda’s Club Newark, Ironbound Community Corporation, Newark Housing Authority, Newark NAACP, Newark School of the Arts, New Community Corporation, Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Newark, Saint Vincent Academy, Union Chapel Community Development Corporation, United Community Corporation, United Way of Essex and West Hudson, University Heights Charter School and Urban League of Essex County.

Newark Neighbors Night follows the success of the NJSO’s previous Friday Night Out events at NJPAC—a March 1 College Night and April 5 LGBT Night.

Music Director Jacques Lacombe conducts the NJSO’s classical season-finale program, featuring the Prelude and “Liebestod” from Wagner’s  Tristan und Isolde  as part of a celebration of the 200th anniversary of the composer’s birth; the program opens with the concert suite from Debussy’s Pelléas et Mélisande.

“The premiere of Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring is a crucial moment in the history of music,” Lacombe says. “It was a shock for the audience in the theater for the premiere [on May 29, 1913, at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées]. In their own ways, Wagner’s Tristan und Isolde and Debussy’s Pelléas et Mélisande were also controversial works at the time they were premiered. [This program came together] with the idea of these key transition moments in history when composers proved that there were new ways to write music.
