At the East Coast premiere of the work by the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center on Thursday, the composer’s particular talents were wonderfully showcased.

“Audience members came up to me during Ask a Musician at intermission to tell me how much they enjoyed Steven Mackey’s concerto. I think the work touched on universal themes, and the patrons I spoke with really responded to it.

“I really enjoyed learning and performing the piece, especially with [guest pianist] Orli Shaham, a great musician who was able to put something so complex together and [bring to life] the music of a composer she knows so well. [Mackey] has a clear vision for the concerto, and I really enjoyed having him at every rehearsal [to offer insight].”
