“In Brahms' Concerto for Violin and Cello concertmaster Eric Wyrick and principal cellist Jonathan Spitz took center stage. From its declamatory three-note opening motives onward through sweeping melodies and violent exclamations, Zhang culled a deep, concentrated orchestral sound and crisp cutoffs. Layers of the score came through cleanly without sacrificing dimension.”

From the Stage

“It’s always exciting to have good soloists come and play with the Orchestra, and it’s even better when it’s your own colleagues. It’s a fun experience, and everyone feels proud to support them. The Brahms Double Concerto is a very evenly written piece for the violin and cello. [Eric Wyrick and Jonathan Spitz] are two people who have played together for more than 30 years, so it’s a lot of fun to hear them play together on stage as soloists. It sort of brings home the whole idea that what we really do on stage, no matter how many people are in the audience, is play chamber music together.”
