But just as one shouldn’t, as the old adage tells us, judge a book by its cover; one shouldn’t judge music by its genre or labels. The performance at New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark was short and easy listening, but underneath the jazzy, popular melodies, conductor Xian Zhang unlocked the deep, rich American traditions in these scores.
